Devices dubbed “Fan Edition” for Samsung devices have had their ups and downs in the market. The Galaxy S20 FE struck the perfect balance between price and hardware, leaking the reward of high sales. But its follow-up, the Galaxy S21 FE, hasn’t had much success. And despite rumors of a Galaxy S22 FE launch, we’ve seen Samsung drop the smartphone.
But in 2023, Samsung has a clear gap in its smartphone lineup. The Galaxy A54 5G comes in at $449, with the next best option being the compact Galaxy S23 at $799. The rumored Galaxy S23 FE could completely fill that gap with a price tag of between $600 and $700.
Here we’ll discuss the features we’d like to see on the phone if it makes its way to the market.
6.4 inch screen again for the best of both worlds
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE ships with a 6.4 inch AMOLED display.
For those who want a big Samsung phone that delivers a premium experience, spending $1,000 is the minimum requirement — except for the best deals available on the latest Galaxy S23 series phones.
The Fan Edition phones launched so far have bridged this gap perfectly, with screens ranging from 6.4 inches to 6.5 inches. We hope the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE will replicate the 6.4-inch size of the Galaxy S21 FE, as it provides the perfect compromise between easy-to-use hardware and a great media viewing experience.
Other features we’d like to get back are the 800 or so nits of typical brightness and the 120Hz refresh rate. Asking the adaptive refresh rate panel might improve battery endurance, but it would also increase the cost of the device, so we feel it’s something worth skipping.
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor
A report by Sammobile currently states that the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE will ship with an Exynos 2200 processor, which features AMD-developed GPU. Ideally, we would like to see the smartphone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. The processor has the ability to maintain high levels of performance for an extended period of time and improve thermal efficiency, each of which positively impacts the user experience.
The latter showed a significant improvement over its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 predecessor and Exynos 2200, be it performance or endurance. Both of these factors can benefit from the “Fan Edition” device, as it will give its users access to power and reliability at an attractive price.
Choosing a Qualcomm processor will provide additional benefits such as access to the Spectra Image Signal Processor, which can result in better image capture.
A camera array that brings the best out of the Galaxy S23 series
The triple camera array on the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE
The last feature we’d like to see on the Galaxy S23 FE is camera hardware parity with the standard Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus and some of the software benefits available on the new smartphones.
The triple camera setup on the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus isn’t much different from what we saw on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus. It sports a 50MP sensor with 12MP telephoto and 10MP with 3x optical zoom.
If this camera hardware makes its way to the Galaxy S23 FE, Samsung will have a very versatile mid-range device. Most of the competing devices in this price range come with a capable wide camera and a medium speed ultrawide camera. The telephoto lens alone will make the device a more versatile tool and therefore attractive to buyers.
Samsung Galaxy S23 FE could be a great $600-$700 smartphone
The principles of a great smartphone, apart from its design, always revolve around the performance it delivers and its camera hardware. Samsung is known to excel on the design side, and its camera implementation, while not everyone’s favorite, is one of the most versatile options on the market.
If Samsung can nail the performance aspect of its planned Fan Edition smartphone, it’s sure to have an attention-grabbing device that will compete well with devices like the Pixel 7 and the upcoming Nothing Phone 2.
