This white noise machine has a timer that you can set for 15, 30, or 60 minutes and plays six soothing nature sounds and sleep sounds. Choose from the soothing sound options of white noise, stream, thunder, summer night, ocean and rain. You can plug the Sound Spa into a wall outlet or use the batteries to take it on your travels, which brings me to one of its best features – it’s incredibly portable. This white noise sound machine is lightweight and slim, so you can slip it into a carry-on bag or personal item without any problem.
what I like: The Homedics Sound Spa is inexpensive, easy to use, and portable. It produces quality sound for the price (although the rain setting has a clear ring), and it has enough sound settings for the average person.
What do not like: When the Sound Spa is on, there is a little green light on top of the device. I am very sensitive to light when sleeping and during sleep (I am a very light sleeper), so this green light was too bright and unnecessary for me. If you want ultra-black darkness, Homedics Sound Spa probably isn’t the option for you, or you could try covering up the light.

Unlike many models, the LectroFan doesn’t have chirping birds, ocean waves, falling water, or other nature sounds, which I think is a good thing. This means that people who buy a white noise machine for white noise get exactly what they want. The LectroFan has 20 total sounds – 10 white noise sounds and 10 fan sounds. It has just three buttons on the front: power, volume control, and sound selection. The adjustable volume control is very sensitive, and I’ve never had trouble finding the right volume level to muffle outside noises on any given night—I’ve used the LectroFan on and off for about six months, both at home and while traveling.
what I like: I really like the simplicity of the LectroFan. Its small size and portability add to this. This is the perfect white noise machine for people who don’t need a lot of sound options, but need to bring their own white noise machine when traveling.
What do not like: There really isn’t anything to hate about the LectroFan, unless you’re looking for something with nature sounds. If so, definitely look elsewhere.

what I like: The huge range of sounds you get with this white noise machine. I use the pink noise setting for sleep and meditation or the rainfall settings to focus while I work. I also love the sharp volume control and sleek design. It never looks out of place on my nightstand or desk.
What do not likeThere’s nothing to dislike about the Sound + Sleep SE. It’s pricey for a sound machine, but well worth the price if you’re having trouble sleeping at night – you can’t put a price on comfort.

This mini bed fan doubles as a sound machine, but it doesn’t actually use white noise — it uses pink noise, a softer type of ambient noise that has been shown to increase the time spent in deep sleep and improve memory. When I lived in a busy apartment complex, this combination of fan and pink noise helped drown out the sounds of cars and passers-by.

The Hatch Baby Rest is a sound machine, night light, and alarm in one. As a night light and sound machine, it is very simple. You can turn on the sound and light from the device itself, change the type of sound or the color of the light and raise or lower the volume and brightness. To do anything more complicated than that, you’ll have to pair it with an app.
If you have a Rest Plus, the app also acts as an audio-only baby monitor (to allow you to) either listen to or talk to your child. The sound will continue to play even when your phone screen is in standby mode.
There are similar products that offer similar features for less — the rest retails for $60 while the rest (which also includes a digital watch and baby monitor) is $90 — but what kept me using the rest was the app’s level of customization and sleek design. It didn’t interfere with my baby’s nursery, the one room in the house where I put a lot of creative effort. It looks like a small candle and doesn’t take up much space on your bookshelf or nightstand.
You’ll need access to an outlet to plug it in, though the Rest Plus can actually hold a charge if you want to move it to another location during nap time.

Dohm advertises itself as the first company to make white noise machines, and the Dohm Classic appears to be the original sound machine for sleep. The Dohm Classic is very simple, much like the LectroFan: it only produces white noise, and the only controls are on/off, high and low. Once you choose High or Low, rotate the cap to adjust the volume to the perfect level for you.
If you’re really looking for simplicity, Dohm Classic embodies it. To me, this white noise machine seems a bit limited for the price, and the sound quality isn’t as great as some of the others on this list. However, it comes from a reputable brand and has nearly 4,000 positive reviews on Amazon, so it’s worth considering if you want a trustworthy product in the middle of what appears to be the price range (around $15 to $90) for white noise machines.

Snooz White Noise Sound Machine is a good choice for people who want real fan sound. Most white noise machines come with a fan sound, but if you’re used to sleeping with a fan on, you can tell the difference.
That’s where Snooz comes in: This sleeping machine is a simple acoustic enclosure with a mechanical fan inside. Obviously, this means that the sound is not duplicated, so that’s a plus. By rotating the body of the machine, you can change the pitch of the fan to find the best sound that drowns out the sounds that keep you awake.
I, for one, would probably rather sleep with a fan because I sleep warm anyway. It’s kind of pricey for a white noise machine with such limited sound options, but the Snooz can work well for people who like fan sounds but don’t want cold air.
