Ahsoka is officially the next Disney+ series that will thrill Star Wars fans everywhere. Created by Dave Filoni and named George Lucas 15 years ago, the character has become a formidable, heart-warming, heroic presence in the Clone Wars animated TV series and movies, and has been woven into other animated Star Wars shows as well. Now, following a brand-new trailer for the live-action series presented at Star Wars Celebration 2023, at ExCel London, here’s everything we’ve learned about the cast, plot, and collaborators on… Ahsoka.
Dawson, Filoni, and new show co-director Jon Favreau join a cast of stars including Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Mary Elizabeth Winstead — who play… Star Wars: Rebels Characters Sabine Wren and Hera Syndula – plus villains: Ivanna Sakhno (Shin Hati), Diana Lee Inosanto (Morgan Elsbeth) and Ray Stevenson (Baylan Skoll). In typical covert fashion, the panel avoided a lot of the series’ specifics and didn’t provide a more specific August 2023 release date, but fans finally got the confirmation they wanted about Grand Admiral Thrawn.
What to expect from Lars Mikkelsen’s leap to live-action as Thrawn
With an edit of the trailer that was shown at Lucasfilm the day before, fans got to see more than the back of Grand Admiral Thrawn’s big bad head; They got to see Lars Mikkelsen’s face for the first time as the live-action villain after voicing the character in the animated series. Created by Timothy Zane, a member of the Chiss race who became an Imperial military leader, Thrawn leads a trilogy of novels following his efforts to lead the remnants of the Galactic Empire against the New Republic. The Mandalorian Already hinted that this Star Wars Legends The story line has been adapted for the live-action series; “We’re starting to hear whispers about Thrawn returning as heir to the Empire,” says Ahsoka in the trailer, which is the title of Xan’s first Thrawn novel.

“It was unique and cool to have this kind of Moriarity villain; strategically intelligent[who]doesn’t have the power but it doesn’t matter,” says Filoni. “He’ll outsmart you and track you down, and play chess better than you. That was a very compelling read. It’s a[Zane]thing and we feel really, really privileged — Lars too — that we bring it to life that way, but we want to make sure we get it right.”
The storylines and relationships that will lead Ahsoka
Over the course of the series, Ahsoka will continue her mission to locate the leader of the AWOL empire as well as Ezra Bridger (Iman Esfandi). “Her relationship with Ezra is a really strong thing and so I think that’s always been on her mind and maybe it’s what keeps pushing her,” says Dawson. The Jedi and Ghost crew member trapped himself with Thrawn in a large space at the end of Season 4 along with a semi-sentient whale creature named a purrgil who was glimpsed at the end of the season. “She was a head-turner. Still stubborn yet, but the nuances were something to build on,” says Dawson. “With[Rebels]I feel like I have actual visual memories to reflect on, which is incredible.”
“Although she’s not good, she’s really driven by trying to do good and she’s aware of the threat that others don’t necessarily see,” the actress adds. “She has her eye on the ball and she knows (Thrawn) is something massive and not someone to take lightly.”

As with previous Star Wars series, Filoni has welcomed a slew of directors to join him Ahsoka including Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse), Steve Green (Boba Fett book), Geeta Patel (Meet Battles), Jennifer Getzinger (westworld) and Rick Famuyiwa (The Mandalorian). Kevin Keener will also score the music for the series, having previously served as a composer Clone Wars And rebels.
“When I tell this kind of story with this character, he knows it because he knows the music,” said Filoni. “Kevin has been a continuum from Clone Wars to Rebels and of course we have this one thing which is collaboration. So everyone participates.”
Filoni confirmed that The Mandalorian composer Ludwig Göransson “did a few things” for the season.
Ahsoka It is currently in post-production and is set to be released in August 2023 on Disney+.
