OpenAI announced the Bug Bounty Program website yesterday, citing transparency and collaboration as reasons for opening the patch program to the general public. The reward for identifying security flaws ranges from $200 for “low risk hits” to a whopping $20,000 for “extraordinary finds”. Program in collaboration with bugcrowdOpenAI says Bugcrowd will handle the process of receiving user-submitted bug reports as well as distributing payments.
OpenAI’s mission is to create AI systems that benefit everyone. To this end, we invest heavily in research and engineering to ensure that our AI systems are safe and secure. However, as with any complex technology, we understand that vulnerabilities and flaws can emerge,” the company wrote on its website. “The OpenAI Bug Bounty is a way for us to learn about the valuable insights of security researchers who contribute to keeping the technology secure. And our company is rewarded.”
Given ChatGPT’s meteoric rise since its public release last fall, device-ghost crowdsourcing is a pretty sure approach to bolstering OpenAI’s security presence — and there’s likely a lot of fans of the technology ready to sign up. There is also the possibility that this is an attempt by OpenAI to flood the company with public reputation by opening up access to internal company machinations, just as Elon Musk did by making parts of The Twitter recommendation algorithm is open source.
