Motorola Moto G Power 5G has a nicer display and 5G this time around

The full battery life 2023 edition of the Motorola Moto G Power trades in some of its battery life for modern conveniences. In addition to 5G, there’s a nicer screen and a more powerful processor, so Moto’s battery claims aren’t as exorbitant this year, and the price is higher. While last year’s 128GB model sold for $249, this year’s version starts at $299. However, this may be a good fit for a budget phone worth buying.

Along with a massive 5,000mAh battery, the Motorola Moto G Power 5G (Lord help me; that’s actually the full product name) includes a MediaTek Dimensity 930 processor with 4GB of RAM. By the looks of it, this should be a serious upgrade from the 4th-generation-only Helio G37 chip in the Moto G Power 2022, which, by many accounts, stinks. And, of course, there’s also 5G, which you might as well have on a new phone in 2023.

This year’s Moto G Power offers a 1080p LCD with a higher refresh rate of 120Hz, which is an improvement from the previous version’s 720p 90Hz screen. The extra resolution is welcome on such a large screen, and bumping up to 120Hz should make motion and animation noticeably smoother. There’s still a 50MP main camera, some mostly useless depth and macro cameras (boo, hess), and a headphone jack (awesome!).

Not surprisingly, Motorola’s battery endurance claims aren’t as bold this time around. It claimed you could get up to three days of battery life in the 2022 model, but this year, that’s “up to 38 hours,” just over a day and a half. With 5G and an even more power-hungry display, that wouldn’t come as a shock.

Prioritizing these feature upgrades over multi-day battery life may be a wise move since most people can live with charging their phone overnight. If the screen and processor updates are as good as they look on paper, they could make the latest G Power a very good deal. In any case, it will arrive on April 13 in the US open at Best Buy, Amazon and Motorola.com; Metro by T-Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, and Xfinity Wireless will sell it at a later date.
