Google Pixel 7a Leak Shows 90Hz Refresh Rate, More Memory

Wireless

It will be some time before Google brings back the flagship Pixel series. Until then, we’ve got the Pixel 7a leaks to get us going. The latest hints from the outside include a look at the phone itself and an indication of what kind of specs might be inside. Google’s next mid-range Pixel could have more memory than its predecessor and a faster refresh rate.

This leak comes from the Vietnamese website Zing News, which claims to have obtained a “beta” version of the Pixel 7a means “for programmers”. But our ears are up. In about four months, it will have been a year since launch Pixel 6a phone. The hardware in the post looks similar to the last-gen Pixel A series, right down to the rear camera bar on the back. It sports a 6.1-inch display, with seemingly “high-quality” materials and a few matte finishes from the last-gen version.

This supposed Pixel 7a has reportedly been remotely locked by Google. Zing News can only run in Android fast boot mode, similar to BIOS modes on Windows devices in that it will display device specifications without having to access the appropriate operating system. This listing revealed that the Pixel 7a could come with 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB in last year’s version. The owner of the Pixel 7a unit, who leaked the device to Zing News, says the settings panel also showed a 90Hz refresh rate option for the display. This memory spike may be needed to support this refresh rate, to ensure a smoother experience across the board. In fact, one of the biggest complaints about the Pixel 6a is that even at its price, it doesn’t offer a comparable refresh rate to Samsung’s A series, with some models boasting 120Hz refresh rates.

Overall, the specs of the supposed Pixel 7a leaked here are in line with our expectations. It still has two 12MP cameras on the back, like the Pixel 6a, though one camera is a standard lens and the other is a wide-angle. There is proof of water resistance, which the Pixel 6a has provided with IP67 certification. But we still need details about the charging capacity and battery size. The Pixel 6a’s 60Hz refresh rate helped increase battery life, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Pixel 7a can maintain that kind of longevity while pushing more frames.

This isn’t the first Pixel 7a leak to be circulating. We recently got a Pixel-like device through the FCC that, although some people are crossing their fingers, is a foldable rather than a mid-range device. Regardless, we should know more by Google I/Owhen the company will launch its next-generation mid-range devices.
