Today’s businesses run complex, distributed environments and need a ubiquitous computing system for all workloads that they can handle wherever they are. We’ve seen an increasing need for customers to not only deploy, manage, and operate across on-premises and one or more clouds, but also to gain better visibility and insights across all of their cloud-to-edge IT investments.
Today, we’re introducing enhanced monitoring and management through the general availability of enhanced Microsoft Azure Arc integration with Datadog. Building on our well-established collaboration, we’re integrating Datadog with Azure Arc to meet customers wherever they are and deliver rich insights from Azure Arc-enabled resources directly in Datadog dashboards. Customers can monitor real-time data during cloud migrations and the performance of applications running in the public cloud and in hybrid or multicloud environments.
Benefits of Azure Arc integration with Datadog
By integrating Azure Arc with Datadog, customers can:
- Monitor the connection status and proxy version of Azure Arc-enabled servers, wherever they are running.
- Automatically add Azure tags to Datadog associated hosts for additional context.
- Select Azure Arc-enabled servers that have the Datadog Agent installed.
- Deploy the Datadog Agent on servers that support Azure Arc as an extension.
- Get consolidated billing for Datadog with Azure subscription billing.
Datadog is a cloud-scale security and monitoring platform for large-scale applications that aggregates data across your entire stack with over 600 integrations for centralized visibility and faster troubleshooting in dynamic architectures. This provides developers and operations teams with the ability to monitor at every layer of their applications on Azure, so they quickly diagnose performance issues.
When Datadog first became an Azure Native ISV service, it allowed customers to simplify their experience to purchase, configure, and manage Datadog right within the Azure portal. It reduces the learning curve to use Datadog to monitor the health and performance of your applications in Azure and prepare customers for a successful migration or update to the cloud.
For many customers, hybrid deployments are a permanent, long-term strategy due to factors such as compatibility and latency requirements, and we are committed to meeting customers wherever they are. With Azure Arc, we provide a consistent set of tools and services for customers to extend cloud technology across distributed infrastructure. More than 12,000 customers use Azure Arc, double the number a year ago. By partnering with organizations like Datadog, we’re unlocking further innovation and bringing Azure services into the tools our customers already use.
Enhanced Azure Arc integration features
Features with general availability today include:
Monitor Arc connection status and proxy version
Customers can easily identify any Azure Arc-enabled resources that are not in an online state. You can also set up Datadog monitors to alert you immediately if the connection is unhealthy. Prior to this new integration, Azure Arc resources will look like any other virtual machine on-premises or in Azure. Now, you can access critical metadata to ensure Azure Arc-enabled Windows and Linux servers, SQL servers, and Kubernetes clusters are secured and connected. IT operators will be able to troubleshoot faster if a resource is disconnected and can quickly restore connectivity to Azure Arc.

Datadog can also show hosts that are running an older version of Azure Arc. It is then easy to update the agent using Azure Update Management and use Azure Automation to get the latest updates to the Azure Arc Agent whenever there is a new version.

Automatically add Azure tags for easy management and compliance tracking
A common benefit of Azure Arc is the use of tags in Azure Resource Manager. Many organizations differentiate on-premises resources by cost center or data center server groups that are subject to regulations or specific requirements. Flags also create an audit trail to help track the history of a specific resource and identify potential security issues when performing audits.
With Azure Arc integration, Datadog can generate rich visualizations and actionable alerts using tags you’ve already created for Azure Arc-enabled resources. Now, when you perform patching or updates to servers that support Azure Arc, you get richer insights to help validate software patches and troubleshoot application issues.
Easily identify which Azure Arc-enabled servers have a Datadog agent
Azure Arc provides hybrid and multicloud servers, Kubernetes clusters, and data services in a single dashboard for seamless management between environments. Apart from pooling resources using Azure Resource Manager, Azure Arc-enabled resources take advantage of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) in Azure, so that different IT teams and developers can easily delegate access to their applications. For the centralized IT monitoring team, you can now confirm that Azure Arc-enabled resources have Datadog Agent by cross-referencing these servers with proxy data to get a real-time view of which Arc resources have Datadog Agent reports.
