Playing games on your PlayStation 5 is of course more exciting than digging through menus and configuration options – but if you invest some time in getting these settings right, you’ll get the benefit in your gameplay.
From avoiding spoilers to taming notifications to enabling all the graphs your PS5 has to offer, there’s a lot to dig into here. All of these options can be found via Settings. Just start by selecting a file gear symbol in the upper-right corner of the PS5 home screen.
If you want to increase the amount of time you get between recharges of your DualSense Wireless Controller, you can have it automatically turn itself off after a certain period of inactivity.

- Make your choice: 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or 60 minutes. The default setting is to not turn off the consoles at all.

When you take screenshots and gameplay clips on your PS5, you have a choice when it comes to what quality your photos and videos are saved to.
- head to Captures and Broadcasts > Captures.
- go to Screenshot format And Video clip format Sets the resolution, file type, and HDR setting for screenshots and videos.
- If you are streaming gameplay over the Internet, the settings for this can be set via broadcast.
You don’t want loads of distracting notifications while you’re on your PS5 – especially if you’re busy trying to beat that elusive boss or set a new high score.
If you go to settings and select notices, you can change how long pop-up notifications appear and whether or not they are accompanied by a sound and a short preview of their contents. You can also turn off popup notifications completely if you want.
Further down the screen itself are options for selecting which events trigger a notification and which don’t, from Messages to Downloads. In each case, you can hide alerts during videos, broadcasts, or games.

It’s hard to completely protect yourself from spoilers, but the PS5 can help when it comes to gaming.
- head to Saved data and game/app settings > spoiler warnings.
- You can now turn on warnings, which will appear when someone tries to share a screenshot with you of game activity you haven’t done yet.
- Screenshots can also be flagged as potentially spoiled by game developers.
You don’t have to accept the default DualSense wireless controller settings you got out of the box.

- Here you can adjust the vibration intensity and trigger effect, the press-and-hold delay, the volume of the console speaker, and the brightness of the console indicators.
It’s important to review the privacy settings for every device you own, and the PlayStation 5 is no different. While you’re in the settings:

Sony is testing the PS5’s voice command feature in the US and UK. Although it’s still in preview, it means you can perform certain actions (such as playing games and controlling media playback) with your voice.
- To enable the feature, go to Voice command (preview).
- The trigger phrase you need is “Hey PlayStation,” and you can also configure settings such as the speed and volume of speech you get from your console.
- Most of the voice commands you’ll need are straightforward, like “pause” or “open…” followed by the name of a specific game. Sony has more information about this new feature and how it works here.
Your PS5 can automatically adjust the refresh rate of games for the best possible performance, as long as you connect it to a TV that supports the feature (check its specs list to see).
- Variable Refresh Rate or VRR can be enabled from Screen & Video > Video Output > VRR.
- You can also enable it for games that don’t explicitly support the feature (results may vary in quality).

Many games give you a choice when it comes to how hard you experience working through the game, and there’s a key setting for that in the PS5 menus.
- Opens Saved data and game/application settings > Game presets > Difficulty.
- You can now choose between easierAnd easyAnd naturalAnd difficultAnd harder or Game default.
You can still make adjustments within the individual games themselves, but this will default in place so you can start playing on your preferred difficulty level more quickly. However, it will only work on titles that know and support this PS5 feature.
If you struggle to read everything displayed on the PS5 interface, you can change the size and style of the text on the screen.

Note that games should follow the same configuration, so text should be easier to read in your games as well.
